Two Books To Think About Business (And Your Website) Differently
Purple Cows stand out.
Love is what attracts people to you.
Recently, we’ve been thinking about some books that could be important pieces of an agency’s success and the two that stood out (like a purple cow) were, you guessed it, “Purple Cow” by Seth Godin and “Lovemarks” by Kevin Roberts.
Purple Cow became an instant classic when it came out. The gist of the book is that it makes perfect sense to stand out as much as you can. Some of the most successful companies have stood out like sore thumbs and it is, in part, because they embrace the “Purple Cow” ideal.
Think about driving on a country road and you happen across a field with a bunch of brown cows. Then, in the distance, you see a purple cow. That would probably make you stop and pay attention. The same can be said for travel websites and content. The more that you can stand out among the crowd, the more people will pay attention. The great news here is that you can create something truly unique that people go back to again and again — and are willing to share with their friends.
We’ve been talking a lot about social media. And, just like a website, your blog, Facebook Fan Page and Twitter can be versions of a “Purple Cow.” Think about how you can stand out. Think about what makes you truly unique and don’t be afraid to share it.
The other book that is a great read is “Lovemarks” by Kevin Roberts. This book discusses the difference between being a “brand” and being a “Lovemark.” Roberts defines a “Lovemark” as “loyalty beyond reason.” In many cases, the travel expert has a strong client base that loves them. They trust them to make the right decisions and they know that they will get nothing but the very best every time.
Even though this book discusses larger, global brands, the ideas in the book make sense to any travel agent. They are simple to digest and absorb and can create a list of actionable items that any agent can put into action.
Each of these books are relatively easy reads. But, rest assured, when you start diving in, you’ll want to get started on figuring out how you can use what you learn right away.
