Making Time To Blog

That headline is one that we hear about constantly.

It’s true, doing any kind of social media takes time and effort. In the course of a day, it may very well fall down the list of “things to do.” Facebook and Twitter can be a bit more manageable, but writing a blog takes quite a bit more effort.

Or does it?

Think about your Facebook and Twitter activity. How much time in a day do you spend in these places? Some people we’ve talked to (in addition to colleagues we work with) say that they spend around 30-45 minutes on Facebook and/or Twitter. They may check their accounts two or three times a day — sometimes more.

Generally, we’ve learned that people’s behaviors can be pretty predictable on Facebook. There’s usually one check in during the morning before work, maybe one at lunchtime and possibly one at the end of the day. Sometimes, people will check it in the evening at home as well. And that time adds up.

Now, think about your blog. It seems like a big mountain to climb.

But, what if, when you’re in the social media “groove,” you took just five extra minutes to write? You don’t necessarily have to write the entire post, but at least chip away at it. If you do this two or three times a day, you may have written enough to get a blog post up.

The vital thing to remember about blog writing is that it doesn’t have to be a long missive. A good post can be as little as 200 words long — and that can take as little as 15 total minutes. Give it a try sometime. Once you get into writing posts in quick bursts, you may be inspired to write longer posts and commit more time to creating more content for your blog.

Next thing you know, you may get to work one morning and realize that you have become a very good blogger.

And it all may start with taking 5 minutes here and there to get started.
