Breaking The Fear Of Writing
People might not think of themselves as writers.
In fact, we hear agents tell us that they are “not good writers.” Some even go as far as to say that they are afraid of writing.
The discipline of writing can be daunting — unless it is broken in to manageable pieces and thought of differently. Believe it or not, you probably are a much better writer than you give yourself credit for. Think about all of the promotional and marketing pieces you’ve written. What about copy for your website? Maybe you worked on a presentation that demanded a heavy supply of writing.
The fact is, we all can write, but we just have to get over the “I’m not a writer” block.
One of the aspects of writing is passion.
Another is experience.
As a travel agent, you have vast reservoirs of both. You are passionate about your business and your customers and you have a wide range of experience that no one else can touch. This is the best built-in advantage for any professional — especially a travel agent.
One aspect of blog writing in particular that can help stem the tide of fear is style. Most blogs have very casual grammar and a relaxed feel. Blogs are meant to be more conversational and this can alleviate the fear that you’re “not a good writer.” In fact, it’s pretty much the opposite. You can write like you’re having a conversation — and that is perfectly acceptable and expected in the blog world.
Another piece of writing for blogs that is in a travel agent’s favor is length. They can be shorter or they can be longer, depending on the topic. A 15-day trip to China may demand more writing, but a thought about travel that can benefit your customers may only take 100 words per post. Even if you start with five 100-word posts, it’s a start and good practice.
